BREAST cancer may be linked to a retrovirus, delegates at the International Congress of Virology in Sydney were told last week. A team led by Robert Garry from Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans found the virus—dubbed the human mammary tumour virus (HMTV)—after hunting for a closely related virus that causes cancer in laboratory mice. The virus was found in cancer patients and people who did not have the disease. Unlike other viruses, Garry believes HMTV is not infectious but is inherited.
