THE humble identification badge has been transformed into a security device that instantly reveals trespassers. To the naked eye, the device made by Cardiff-based Visiscan Technology looks like one of the simple lapel badges issued by many large companies to their employees. However, to security staff watching passing employees on closed-circuit television (CCTV), the badges show up as flashing lights. The infrared light is invisible to humans but can be picked up by ordinary CCTV. Many organisations already use CCTV to monitor people as they move through sensitive areas. But with ordinary CCTV, it is difficult to distinguish authorised visitors from intruders. The flashing badges can be used in a variety of ways. If only visitors are issued with the tags they will be spotted the moment they stray into secure areas. Alternatively, if security staff supply all employees with badges, then intruders without flashing badges will quickly be revealed. The badges can safely be used in the presence of sensitive equipment and do not require specialised CCTV. “We originally designed them for monochrome systems,” says Visiscan director Ian Mansell, “but they work just as well with colour.” The microchip circuitry in the tag is protected against tampering. Each badge is powered by a nickel-cadmium battery,
